beach mini sessions in black and white

I don’t always photograph families in black and white. In fact, I am generally drawn to editing in color because I seem to always find a way to see color as part of the story.

But lately, I’ve been really drawn to black and white for a whole series of photos. Seeing a story play out in multiple images, using only the elements of design to convey the story and tone rather than relying on color is a very interesting exercise for me.

One thing that I am finding really lovely about editing in black and white is that it allows me to see line, contrast, repetition, shapes, etc. more prevalently than I do when color is there to distract my eyes.

Not saying that I will never edit in color again, but color does it’s own magical thing. It adds to the story by giving us clues about what the photo is saying. Color might be easier to read and interpret. Take this photo for example. The last image in the next series with seaweed. When the photo is in black and white, your eyes are first drawn to the repetition in her legs, her sand covered toes and hands. Your eyes flow through the frame in a circular pattern, taking it all in. When this photo is in color, the seaweed is the first thing you see, and then you move through the frame. Neither is better, the experience is just different.

I will always be the kind of photographer that wants to study my own work, observe how it makes me feel, what I see and how I can make my art better. I will never stop finding joy in the learning and the growing.

That is how I know I love what I do. My fervent eagerness to not only improve, but the joy I find in the process of growth gives me life every day.
